CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – Across the country, including in West Virginia, there are growing calls for President Joe Biden to withdraw his candidacy for re-election.
Many are concerned that he is putting other political races in jeopardy. Some Democratic Party leaders have spoken privately with the president to at least entertain the idea of withdrawing from re-nomination, saying he is more open to it. But he still hasn’t moved.
For the first time, President Biden’s campaign manager has publicly acknowledged that there is a “decline” in the number of the president’s Democratic supporters and campaign donations.
Nationally, Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) has called on Biden to withdraw. Tester’s Senate seat, as well as two seats in West Virginia and Ohio, are seats Republicans want to capture to take control of the Senate.
Then Democrat Kayla Young (Kanawha) called on Biden to withdraw his candidacy.
Many political analysts believe that President Biden will ultimately refrain from seeking re-nomination.
“Republicans could take over not only the presidency but also both houses of Congress unless Democrats take the initiative and escort the president off the stage,” said Professor Emeritus Robert Rupp of West Virginia Wesleyan College.
Those calling for the president to withdraw say he must decide soon so Democrats can choose between Vice President Kamala Harris or several other lawmakers who have expressed interest in the nomination. The Democratic National Convention will be held in Chicago from August 19-22.
President Biden said Friday he will resume campaigning next week after spending several days recovering from COVID-19 at his home in Delaware.
