As the 10th anniversary of Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson approaches on August 9, the St. Louis City Council in its infinite “wisdom” has decided to mark the occasion. A bill introduced by Councilman Rasheen Aldridge calls for the renaming of a portion of Tucker Blvd. that leads directly to in front of the St. Louis City Hall, after Michael Brown.

The honorary section of the street is to be renamed “Michael OD Brown Way.” Similar to the way George Floyd is celebrated, the bill states: “Michael Brown’s legacy for the city of St. Louis should be honored for the impact his life had on our city, our nation, and the entire world”:

On August 9, 2014, Brown, 18, was walking with a friend when they were stopped by Officer Darren Wilson while walking in the middle of the road. Wilson stopped the two because they matched the description of two men who had stolen items from a nearby supermarket. A physical altercation ensued, during which Brown reach into Wilson’s SUV and try to grab his weapon. The fight ended with Brown being shot dead.

The incident sparked violent protests and riots in Ferguson and St. Louis that eventually spread across the country, resulting in violent clashes between protesters and police. It also sparked the birth of the Black Lives Matter movement. Following the riots, the Ferguson Commission was formed to study social and economic conditions throughout the region. Aldridge served on that commission.

Aldridge’s modern Bill also claims that Brown’s Tod facilitated the formation of a coalition that contributed to political change in the city of St. Louis and ensured that more black candidates were elected to political office.

Renaming a street after Brown will not meet with much opposition in the city of St. Louis itself. Like many other places, St. Louis has been governed by liberal Democrats for decades. The last time a Republican sat in the mayor’s office was 1949. There are still those who believe the myth of “Hands up, don’t shootthat Wilson shot Brown when he surrendered. So it is no surprise that in an era when Democrats are all for coddling criminals, they celebrate the life of a man who allegedly attacked a store employee before he allegedly stole from this store.

For the renaming to happen, it would require at least 60 percent support from those who are registered voters and live or own businesses along the stretch of Tucker Blvd. that is to be renamed. They would then have to sign a petition and the City Council would have to accept those signatures before it can make the street name change.

University City is another nearby suburb of St. Louis that is home to many popular bars and restaurants. There you will find the St. Louis Walk of Fame. Stars engraved on the sidewalk bear the names of renowned St. Louisans such as Tina Turner, TS Eliot, and Charles Lindbergh. Is Michael Brown next?
