West Virginia residents can now add their driver’s license and state identification cards to their Apple Wallet for use at some Transportation Security Administration checkpoints at airports in the state and across the country.
Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced the news Thursday at the state Capitol in Charleston, West Virginia.
“This is a technological leap forward for our state as West Virginia becomes the 12th state in the country to adopt this technology,” Morrisey said. “This is a first step toward a broader rollout aimed at making everyday life easier for West Virginians.”
The rollout, conducted in collaboration with the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles, is underway, and Morrisey said they hope to expand the use of the digital ID to businesses and more.
Currently, West Virginia residents can show their ID with their iPhone and Apple Watch at 250 TSA checkpoints at airports across the U.S., including West Virginia International Yeager Airport in Charleston and Huntington Tri-State Airport.
“It’s only going to grow,” Morrisey said, adding that some of the state’s smaller airports are still waiting for scanners that can recognize digital ID cards.
A press release from the governor’s office said: “ID in Apple Wallet leverages the privacy and security features built into Apple devices to protect a user’s identity and personal information.” Users do not need to unlock or hand over their device to show their ID.
